Rampage ends year for Metros

(Nashville Tennessean, 09.08.97)

After scoring two goals in eight regular-season games, Dan Stebbins matched that total yesterday as the Milwaukee Rampage eliminated the Nashville Metros 3-0 in the first round of the A-League playoffs.

Trailing 1-0 late in the game, the Metros pressed on offense in an attempt to tie the game — nearly doing so on a shot by Myles Stoddard in the 73rd minute — but Stebbins scored in the 81st and 83rd minutes to close out the contest.

“Nashville was pushing forward in the second half and were putting some good things together,” Stebbins said. “But we held strong on defense.”

Stebbins also had an assist on the first goal, a 25-yard shot by Travis Roy that deflected off a Metros defender.

Nashville nearly tied the game 1-1 in the last 10 seconds of the first half, but Ken Rogaski’s blast was headed away by Roy at the goal line

“I think that would have made a major difference,” Metros coach Greg Petersen said. “We would have been up [emotionally] at halftime.”

Defender Samuel Ekeme (two red cards during the season, missed both playoff games) and midfielder Andrew Galloway (two yellow cards in previous game) missed the game.

But Petersen was satisfied with the effort of the Metros who did take the fied.

“The guys played very well in both playoff games,” he said. “All things considered, this has been an exceptional first year. Things will only get better in Nashville.”
