(Nashville Tennessean, 06.06.82)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Nashville Diamonds’ offensive problems continued here last night, as the team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Carolina Lightning for the squad’s fifth consecutive loss.

The Nashville entry in the American Soccer League will try again tonight, as the Diamonds host their rivals from Rochester, N.Y., at 7:35 in a match to be played at Tennessee State University’s 16,000-seat Hale Stadium.

The Diamonds fell to 1-5 with the loss last night. Carolina, the 1981 ASL champs, had struggled through eight scoreless halves before Paul Child went to work, scoring a pair of second-half goals. The victory avenged a 2-0 loss to the Diamonds in the season-opener for the Nashville squad.

Carolina out-shot the Diamonds 21-6 in the contest.

The Rochester Flash brings a 0-1-1 record into tonight’s game, the first meeting of the season with the team from Nashville.

The Diamonds-Flash contest will signal the return to action of Nashville team captain Mac Garrigan, who was injured in the second game of the season and has been sidelined for two weeks. Godwin Iwelumo, the new Diamonds signee from Alabama A&M may also appear tonight.

The successful youth soccer leagues from Murfreesboro and Hendersonville will be honored at the contest.
